'19 Kids and Counting' Michelle Duggar's advice for new mothers: Don't stop having date nights with your husband!
Michelle Duggar has 19 children so she knows a thing or two about what it is to be a mother and with her own daughter, Jill, expecting a child, she's shared some great advice for new mums.
The obvious thing to say would be spend time bonding with your baby and although that is part of what she says new mothers should do, Michelle has some wise words about ensuring that the relationship between mum and dad stays healthy.
And for that, she says new parents should make sure they don't give up on having date nights with each other just because of their new arrival.
She says that first off, she would let her own daughters know she is available to babysit any time so that they are able to get out and have that one-to-one time with their husbands.
But even if new mothers, can't get a babysitter, she recommends they still get out with their partners for the occasional date and simply bring baby along.
"Even though you've got a little one, you can take the baby along with you and spend some time with your sweetheart," she wrote on her blog recently.
"Try to make it a part of your weekly schedule – whenever you can find time - because your schedules are going to be demanding with a new baby and work."
While the date night is a great chance to take a break, Michelle said there was an important family-building dimension to it; in essence, happy mums and dad make happy kids.
She explained: "It's important to keep that focus on building and strengthening your marriage relationship because that gives your children stability in their lives. When they see mum and dad are making it a priority to love each other and focus on their relationship, it reminds them that their parents love each other and that their relationship is a top priority in the family."
Other tips from the wonder mum include taking lots of pictures of their newborn during those special first few months of life, even though they are spending much of that time just eating and sleeping.
And what's important for baby is also important for new mums too. Michelle's advice is that they allow themselves the occasional nap to help them cope with the many demands on them.
"You can see everything that needs to be done around the house. You need to catch up on laundry; you need to do some cleaning; you want to do some ironing -- whatever," she says.
"But just take that break and sleep, even if it's just an hour while the baby is sleeping. Afterwards you'll feel so much better and be ready to tackle the world."
