Microsoft Lumia 640 and Lumia 640 XL release date, price and specs

During the Mobile World Congress 2015, tech giant Microsoft was able to unveil two budget smartphones named the Lumia 640 and its phablet sized variant, the Lumia 640 XL. The company is most likely planning to get any sort of momentum going its way before showcasing the public its grand prize in the form of its 'unified interface' operating system, Windows 10. While both smartphones will be running Windows Mobile 8.1, the Lumia 640 and Lumia 640 XL will automatically be updated to the company's Windows 10 platform.

As for the hardware specifications, the Lumia 640 will be possessing a 5 inch display that will be rendering a resolution of 720p. The device will be powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 400 SoC, which will be running ARM's Cortex-A7 processor at a default clock speed of 1.2 GHz. It will also feature 1 GB of RAM, 8 GB of internal storage, an 8 MP rear and a 1 MP front camera. Both the Lumia 640 and Lumia 640 XL will be available in the following color schemes:

  1. Cyan
  2. Orange
  3. White
  4. Black

One perk of purchasing either one of the two smartphones is that users will be getting Microsoft's Office 365 Suite free for a whole 12 months. As for the larger screen size brother of the Lumia 640, the Lumia 640 XL is assimilated with a 5.7 inch screen size. Apart from the 13 MP and 5 MP rear and front camera respectively, the remainder of the hardware components have remained the same between the two devices. However, consumers will be pleased to know that each device will be shipping out in the 3G and LTE connectivity variants.

Microsoft has made the purchasing decision extremely flexible for Windows Mobile fans because each connectivity variant will also be available in the single and dual SIM versions. Pricing details of all variants have been detailed below:

  • Microsoft Lumia 640: 3G ($155) and LTE ($178). Single and dual SIM available
  • Microsoft Lumia 640 XL: 3G ($211) and LTE ($245). Single and dual SIM available

The Lumia 640 XL is expected to be officially launched this month while its smaller sized brother will be launched in the month of April.
