"Modern Family" has yet to be greenlit for a new season. Despite this, executive producer and co-creator Steve Levitan believes that the show will be renewed. He said that the writers will gather again in about a month to talk about where the new season will bring the characters.

"In about a month or so, the writers will re-gather and we will sit down and we will start with a big, 'What now?'" he said during a panel discussion at the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, where an advance screening of the season 8 finale was held.

The episode will feature the graduation of Manny (Rico Rodriguez) and Luke (Nolan Gould). As such, season 9, should it push through, will already feature most of the characters all grown up.

Levitan also admitted that the political situation in the country has led him to think about where to bring the show. He said, "I've been thinking about that lately. How is our political movement going to affect our taste in comedy? It's so much a part of our life now in a really big way that I wonder if it will seep in more in next season with what we're all going through."

As said by Deadline, "Modern Family" is a show that pushes boundaries and promotes inclusion, as it features interracial and homosexual relationships. As such, there is ready material in case the show chooses to go down a political route.

Many of the main cast members' contracts will end after season 8. As such, their negotiations with the studio regarding their salaries will play a role in determining if the show will get renewed for a ninth season. According to unnamed sources interviewed by Variety, the negotiations for the new season are about to end. This was seconded by TV Series Finale, which said that "Modern Family" is likely to be renewed.
