Those who have the original Moto X for a smartphone companion will be delighted to know that the 2013-released flagship will be able to upgrade to Android Lollipop in a few weeks time. Motorola Senior Director of Software Product Management David Schuster himself relayed the sweet news via Google Plus. 

"I know that a lot of people have been asking about the status of the Moto X (1st Gen) Lollipop upgrade. I can see the frustration and in some cases the anger about how long it has taken to get the upgrade deployed," Schuster said, acknowledging the users' sentiments on the matter. 

"It has been a struggle due to the lack of support from some of our partners but I am glad to announce that we are starting TestDrive in both the US and LatAm. If all goes well we should start full deployment in a few weeks," he then finally dished out. 

Before the announcement, Schuster already revealed that the Moto X 2013 will jump straight to Android 5.1 Lollipop, which is a newer build of the operating system that has more fixes for bugs found on the original version. However, he failed to mention which of the device's models will make the switch first, but it is almost certain that unlocked versions will be updated ahead of the units from carriers. 

In addition to incremental bug fixes, the Moto X 2013, since it will be going straight from Android KitKat to Android 5.1 Lollipop, will also get to enjoy the new Material Design and its vibrant and bold animations. The firmware also promises stability and better performance as well as greater security with the new lockscreen, battery saver feature and the Smart Lock feature. 

To get ready for the Lollipop makeover and a smooth installation process, owners need to make some room. The update is a big one so they need to clear up about 1 GB of space. A notification should pop up soon so users of the device should keep their eyes peeled for more announcements.
