Google has already released the Android 5.0 Lollipop OS, but has not yet delivered the new operating system to previous Nexus devices like the Nexus 4, 5, 7, and 10.  The company announced that it will release the latest OS version to Nexus devices on Nov. 12.

However, although Google has not yet released the OS to these models, it does not mean that users cannot download and install it to their devices. XDA developers have posted on forums an AOSP-based Lollipop for Nexus 5, Nexus 4 and Wi-Fi Nexus 7 (2013).

Well-known developer OldDroid posted instructions for download and installation of the Lollipop OS for the Nexus 5 handset.  Meanwhile, recognized developers C-o-M and scrosler posted instructions for the Lollipop OS for Nexus 4 and the Wi-Fi variant of the Nexus 7 (2013), respectively.

Installation of the operating system requires running the firmware in manual ROM and those who are unfamiliar with the process should stay clear from updating their devices to Lollipop OS.  Moreover, updating the device may result to unexpected consequences and may break one's mobile device.

It is only natural that Android 5.0 Lollipop OS will be released to Nexus and Google Play Edition devices first. Google will then roll out the mobile software to Android OEM manufacturers. Motorola, HTC and LG were reportedly the first mobile manufacturers to roll out the Android update to their respective devices.

The new Android 5.0 Lollipop boasts a "new design language" which is coined as Material Design. This design is claimed to be cleaner and more organized than previous OS, which developers like.  The mobile software has new features such as improved notifications, lockscreen, multi-tasking, notification bar, and better battery. Moreover, the new OS is expected to greatly improve the security of the new devices as it will enable users to unlock their smartphone without the need to enter a password.
