The Nexus 5 and Nexus 6 recently got a reboot but the Asus-made Nexus 7 from 2013 hasn't. But for those who have been waiting for news about a third-generation version of the tablet will be happy to know that there's still a chance that a new version of the device will eventually be out.

Asus chairman and former CEO Jonney Shih hinted at the possibility in an interview with Trusted Reviews. It was revealed by Shih that while it isn't a tall order to release a new version, the problem lies with figuring out how to overhaul a product that's already stellar as it is.

"So for the [first-generation] Nexus, I think that both parties feel that this will be an exciting product, with this kind of...price and this kind of functionality and quality," Shih said about the pride of Asus and Google, the original Nexus 7.

"Even [the second-generation Nexus 7], we moved to the Full HD screen, and we still believe in this kind of beauty. It still makes sense," Shih then recalled. As for a third-generation Nexus 7, he said that it "takes a lot of discussion."

With the competition in the tablet and smartphone field growing, media outlets believe that Google and Asus will have to work on making the Nexus 7 stay relevant and it may do so by adding features like a fingerprint sensor and a Type-C USB port, which new and high-end releases almost always have.

It will also be exciting to see Nexus 7 in a new shell, one that Techno Buffalo thinks should be more premium. While it appears that the tech firms can pull off all that, keeping the price budget friendly, which is something that many fans love most about the product, will certainly be the challenge.

It seems to be too early for some elaborate info and so Shih resorted to teasing fans to "stay tuned" about what happens and what the future holds for the Nexus 7 third-gen.
