Apparently, Nintendo's gesture of wanting to shake off its family-friendly image is starting to commence now, as its new list of games for the Switch includes the remaster for the notoriously difficult game "Dark Souls."

This came as a surprise both for fans of the Bandai Namco and From Software game, as well as owners of the Switch since this marks the first time that a "Souls" game is getting ported for a handheld console. Previously, all games of the "Souls" sub-genre of roleplaying games (RPGs) were only released on the PlayStation, Xbox, or PC.

"Dark Souls Remastered" will be arriving on the Switch on May 25, which is the same date as the release for the Xbox One, PS4, and the Microsoft Windows versions, and it will feature updated visuals. However, owners of the Switch should expect the graphics for the handheld console version to be less impressive than those from the PC and home consoles.

"Dark Souls Remastered" is essentially an improved version of the popular and award-winning 2009 game, "Dark Souls," which puts players in the shoes of the chosen undead, who is beset with the monumental task of seizing the power of the fire from the gods of a dying world. This is easier said than done since compared to the god in-game, the player character is just mere fodder hence the unforgiving difficulty of the game where every death will reset progress.

The developers of "Dark Souls Remastered" have also confirmed that the downloadable content (DLC) for the game, named "Artorias of the Abyss," will also be included in all the platform versions. This was similar to what they did with the PC version of the game which was released in 2011 called "Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition."

Apart from the promised graphical and optimization improvements for "Dark Souls Remastered," no other details have been revealed regarding the Switch version. It is not yet clear how the game plans to take advantage of the features of the Switch, but more news is expected to be unveiled once the remaster nears its release.
