'No Man's Sky' release date: Game development, conceptualization discussed at GDC 2015

The upcoming adventure video game "No Man's Sky" will be released by Hello Games later this year, which is why the British gaming studio is starting to talk about the game concept in different venues as early as now. 

In a video interview posted by Game Crate, Hello Games founder Sean Murray shared how he came up with the inspiration for the game. According to Murray, he was inspired by his childhood concepts that were influenced by other popular video games like "Elite" as well as other science fiction novels that he read over the years. Murray also talked about the British studio's goal of coming up with a game world that will provide an extensive amount of exploration. 

Meanwhile, the studio's art director Greg Duncan also discussed the upcoming procedurally generated open universe at the Game Developer's Conference 2015 in San Francisco last Monday. According to Duncan, it was almost impossible for their small team to finish the creation of at least 18 quintillion planets that are estimated to be featured in the game because the game world is very extensive. This is why the game studio decided to use a team of "mindless idiots," or the computer code and algorithms that can imitate the structure that he and the rest of the team at Hello Games created to help them in coming up with the big universe for "No Man's Sky." 

Duncan's talk at the GDC 2015 will have a follow up on Thursday, March 5. This time, they will discuss how they conceptualized and created all the artwork in the game. According to the blog post written on the official Hello Games site, they "will be showing some glimpses of the technology we've developed to produce procedural places, creatures and vegetation, and give you an idea of how he came to love letting a computer decide how his game should look (this was not easy), and how we all work together."
