Although OnePlus has just released the OnePlus 3T, fans are already expecting a follow-up. Speculations suggest that instead of the OnePlus 4, the tech startup will jump versions and will release a new flagship in the OnePlus 5.

According to industry followers, one major factor why OnePlus launched the OnePlus 3T is that, essentially, it serves as the fourth-gen company flagship. Supposedly, the number four is considered to be bad luck in some parts of Asia, and it is why OnePlus has decided to introduce the "OnePlus 4" as a step-up version to the OnePlus 3 instead of an entirely new variant. This will make the next flagship release jump model versions, and be taken to market officially as the OnePlus 5.

Meanwhile, although the OnePlus 3T has been recently released, OnePlus will still schedule a year-long refresh for its next-gen flagship, with the launch date of the original OnePlus 3 as its starting point. This means that even with the step-up variant already out, the OnePlus 5 is expected to come in the middle of 2017, almost a year after the June 2016 release of the OnePlus 3.

In addition, although the step-up OnePlus 3T has launched with upgrades, the OnePlus 5 will still offer major improvements over its predecessors even with only a six-month interim in between releases. The OnePlus 5 is expected to come out with a newer Snapdragon 835 chipset, at least 6 GB of RAM, 64 GB of internal storage, and Android Nougat platform right out of the box. Since OnePlus has already revealed that it will not be changing displays soon, it is expected that the OnePlus 5 will still carry the same 5.5-inch Optic AMOLED screen from the OnePlus 3T, along with full HD resolution. It is yet to be seen if OnePlus will go with recent trend and upgrade into a dual-cam setup for the upcoming flagship.
