"Pacific Rim: Uprising" has not debuted on the big screen yet, but fans might already have a reason to look forward to the franchise's future installments. Director Steven S. DeKnight revealed that the movie could be followed up with a crossover with King Kong and Godzilla.

Speaking to Collider, DeKnight said that the "Pacific Rim" and Legendary MonsterVerse crossover is very much possible. "I won't say there's an Easter Egg," he told the publication, "but there's been a lot of discussion about that possibility [of crossing over]."

Talks of a three-way crossover started when Legendary and Warner Bros. announced their plans of creating a MonsterVerse, which started with "Godzilla" in 2014 and continued with this year's "Kong: Skull Island." Since "Pacific Rim" features monstrous creatures as well, some fans thought it would be cool to see classic movie monsters like Toho's alpha predator and the gigantic ape together with the film's very own Kaijus. It turns out DeKnight would definitely love to see that happen too.

"Look I think it would be fantastic to have the Pacific Rim universe join Legendary's Monster Universe, it seems like a natural step," he explained. "And part of the big overall plan after the third movie we've talked about is that could happen, it's always a possibility."

However, the director made it clear that it is just a mere idea. A "Godzilla" sequel and its crossover with Kong are still on queue for a 2019 and 2020 release, respectively. If anything, the studios behind the properties may want to wait and see how the upcoming films are received first before folding them together with "Pacific Rim" into a single universe.

"Uprising" does leave it open for "Pacific Rim 3" to happen, according to DeKnight. So, if all goes smoothly, the Jaegers could very well end up fighting Godzilla or King Kong next.

"Pacific Rim 2" is set to premiere on March 23, 2018.
