PlayStation Plus free games for January 2016 list announced

Playstation Europe

The official PlayStation Blog has revealed the complete list of free games that subscribers to Sony's PlayStation Plus can download for the month of January.

As stated in the report, the two main games being offered are throwbacks to classic titles of the past, remastered or remade for the modern gaming platform.

The first main title is "Grim Fandango Remastered," which is available for PS4 and PS Vita owners. The LucasArts game was originally released in 1998 but saw a recent HD remaster in in January 2015. The game focuses on Manny Calavera, a travel agent working for the Department Death and is tasked with guiding souls in the afterlife.

Second is the PS4 title "Hardware: Rivals." This is a direct successor to the PS2 game "Hardware: Online Arena." The game focuses on fast-paced vehicle to vehicle action similar to the "Twisted Metal" games. "Hardware: Rivals" is set to release on Jan. 5, making its debut right on PlayStation Plus.

PS3 players will be able to download "Dragon Age: Origins" and "Medal of Honor: Warfighter." While the latter was not received well by critics, "Dragon Age: Origins" is what many consider to be the true spiritual successor to classic CRPG titles like "Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn" and "Planescape: Torment."

PS Vita players will be able to download "Grim Fandango Remastered" but will also be able to download "History Legends of War Patton" and "Nihilumbra."

"History Legends of War Patton" is a game set in World War II and was only released in Europe. The game is turn-based and focuses heavily on tank combat. "Nihilumbra" initially released as an iOS game but the puzzle-platformer title gained critical acclaim and was later ported to other platforms including the PC and PS Vita.

All of the games will be available on the first Tuesday of the month, Jan. 5.
