"Powerpuff Girls" has been renewed for a second season. As reported by Entertainment Weekly, the news has been confirmed following the first season's victory at this year's Emmy Awards, in which the show won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Short Form Animated Program. No official release date has yet been announced.

"'The Powerpuff Girls' is on a momentous run with its first Emmy nod, a debut appearance at one of the biggest fan events of the year, and now a second season greenlight," stated Cartoon Network CCO Rob Sorcher. "Congratulations to the Cartoon Network creative teams who have super-powered this property with the perfect amount of Chemical X to bring a hit show for a new generation of fans."

"Powerpuff Girls" season 2 will see the return of Professor Utonium, Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup as they try to live normal lives together while saving the city of Townsville from supervillains such as Mojo Jojo. Although unconfirmed, it is speculated that all of the season 1 voice cast members will return for season 2.

The first season premiered back in April and is scheduled to air a total of 40 episodes. As of the time of writing 22 episodes have been released thus far, along with several internet exclusives and a special crossover with "Teen Titans Go." There is no official date for the release of the remaining episodes and the finale has no official premiere date.

"Powerpuff Girls" originally ran on Cartoon Network from 1998 to 2005 and like the reboot series it was a highly acclaimed series favored by audiences and critics. The 2016 reboot updates the aesthetics while keeping the artstyle similar to the original. Many voice actors return to reprise their roles but the titular Powerpuff Girls are now voiced by Amanda Leighton, Kristen Li and Natalie Palamides.

Entertainment Weekly also reveals that for the first time in the franchise there will be a "Powerpuff Girls" panel at this year's San Diego Comic Con.
