R Kelly's transgender daughter: 'I didn't think it would be this big of a deal'
R Kelly's transgender daughter has been in the headlines a lot this week after recently announcing that she was transgender and living as a boy.
Formerly Jaya, he now goes by the name of Jay Kelly, and has been speaking openly about his decision on his Ask.fm profile.
He says he has been identifying as male since around the age of "6 or 7" and wants to date girls, not boys.
Since the announcement, he has continued to answer questions about his transition from other Ask.fm users.
"I believe I am a boy and want surgery, and the medication to help me [be] who I was supposed to be," he wrote.
When asked by one user if he felt he was too young to know exactly what he wants, he wrote back: "I don't believe in age."
Jay, 14, says his mother has been very accepting of his decision and refers to him as a boy, while his older sister Joann speaks of him as her "little brother".
While he's comfortable with his decision, he suggests it's been challenging to go through the female to male change with a celebrity dad.
Asked by one user if he liked being a celebrity's child, he answered: "Not exactly". And when another user asked if it is "difficult having a famous father during your transition", he replied simply: "Yep."
Another Ask.fm user accused Jay of loving the "fame" and wanting "everyone to know about you" after saying in a previous post that people could tell others about his transgender identity.
He refuted he loved the fame, saying: "I said they can [tell others] if they wanted to, i didnt think it would be this big of a deal. I just wanted people to know so that they werent confused. You know?"
His father, R&B singer R Kelly was silent on the topic for several weeks but hit headlines this week after appearing uncomfortable with his daughter's change in an interview with Chicago radio station WCGI.
Asked about Jay's announcement, R Kelly told the interviewer: "You don't really wanna open it up by saying my daughter is becoming my son. Because if that were true..."
When the interview interjected that it had been reported on blogs, the singer said: "Don't even give the blogs that kind of credit. You know what I'm saying? Real talk.
"Always believe what you see with your own eyes that is. Always believe what you see. That is the best way to go about this business.
"And I've heard a lot of things about a lot of people and it was never true. You gotta know there's a back story. There's a background. That's why you can't judge nobody."
R Kelly went on to say that his all his children are "lovely kids that I am in love with".
Ask.fm users were curious about R Kelly's response, with one asking Jay if his dad was "ignoring you because of your decision".
"I don't know, bur [sic] he kind of understands me being trangender so i wouldn't think that would be the reason," Jay replied.
