Rockstar Games has confirmed that a major project is underway, and speculations suggest that it is the much-awaited "Red Dead Redemption 2." Leaks have supposedly already made their way online, including gameplay and story details.

Industry followers say that in terms of story and gameplay, the upcoming sequel will have major improvements over its predecessor. Reportedly, "Red Dead Redemption 2" will feature two major protagonists with different story lines, while the entire setting for the game will take it outside the deserts and parched lands of the Wild West. Previously, it is rumored that the sequel will be dubbed as "Legends of the West," and will take place in a much bigger and more open world than the setting in the original "Red Dead Redemption."

Meanwhile, although it is unclear if main protagonist John Marston will be back for the sequel, it is said that "Red Dead Redemption 2" will feature more than one main character. Interestingly, since Marston died in the original game, the follow-up title may instead serve as a prequel for the series, particularly since it is confirmed that Rockstar Games' parent company, Take Two Interactive, wants the game to evolve into a fully-fledged main IP, much like how the "Grand Theft Auto" series is set up.

As to when fans can expect "Red Dead Redemption 2," Rockstar Games teases fans for a major announcement at this year's Gamescom trade show. The studio has yet to come out which of their current franchises will be showcased at the event, so fans are of two minds between "Red Dead Redemption 2" and another much-awaited follow-up, "Grand Theft Auto VI." However, some industry followers believe that an announcement for the former is more likely, given speculations that "Red Dead Redemption 2" has been in development for some time now.
