Morty's parents — Beth and Jerry — will possibly get a divorce next season because of their unresolved marital problems. On the bright side, Rick gets out of jail with the help of his grandkids, Summer and Morty.

Previously in "Rick and Morty," Beth and Jerry were having marital problems. When Beth gave birth to Summer at the age of 17, she gave up on her dreams of becoming a surgeon. However, Beth somehow felt that her sacrifice was not worth it because Jerry became an irresponsible husband. Later on, Jerry was able to find a job under the Federal Government. Unfortunately, this meant her husband started working with the person who got Rick sent to jail, which may cause Beth to resent Jerry even more.

As confirmed by Geek, Beth's story in season 3 will move forward without Jerry. Showrunner Dan Harmon talked about how Beth and Jerry's marriage had become toxic in the commentary track in the "Little Rick" episode. He also explains that they will develop Beth's story more than focusing on the marriage.

"I thought that Jerry and Beth getting a divorce would be like Kenny being killed in South Park, like, when we first conceived the show... that it would never run out of shelf life that that was the kind of joke of like, oh all our parents were about to get a divorce. But, I think Millennial viewers are like, 'I don't understand, why don't they just recycle more?' So, season three we kind of move the Beth story forward."

Both Ryan Ridley and Justin Roiland (who provides the voices for both Morty and Rick) revealed that Harmon's statement is a spoiler for season 3.

Meanwhile, Rick was imprisoned in "Rick and Morty" season 2. Entertainment Weekly confirmed during San Diego Comic-Con last July that Rick will get out of prison early in season 3. Harmon affirms that Rick will get out of prison in the first episode, possibly through the help of his grandkids Summer and Morty.
