An early Christmas celebration was led by The Salvation Army last night at the Royal Albert Hall, with the ministry's annual carol concert.

The evening has become a renowned tradition from the Salvation Army, known to capture the essence of Christmas.

The concert opened up with the 5,000-strong congregation standing and singing "Joy to the World" in unison, with music led by the International Staff band, International Staff Songsters, Croyden Children's Choir.

Commissioner John Matear, leader of The Salvation Army in the UK, addressed the crowd with a warm greeting, as he emphasised the mission of the ministry and highlighted the glory of the coming of Christ.

"Instead of saying tonight, 'What has the world come to?' let us say 'Look who has come to the world.' And His name is Jesus," said Commissioner Matear.

"Let us look at the scope and significance of Christ."

Renowned television presenter Jeremy Paxman hosted the show, opening up with a story of his family's close connection to The Salvation Army. He also praised the charitable works of the organisation.

As traditional Christmas favourites such as "The First Noel" and "Silent Night" were sung throughout the evening, British actors Thelma Barlow, Julia McKenzie, and June Whitfield read stories about the nativity, reminding the audience of the true meaning behind Christmas.

Towards the finale of the night, guest singer Captain Margaret W. Davis from the US led the congregation with dynamic Christmas songs "Winter Wonderland" and "All is Well".

The evening concluded with the song "Hark! The Herald Angels
Sing".
