While Samsung is currently enjoying its recent success with the new Galaxy S7 flagship lineup, it seems that the tech giant is not resting on its laurels. Rumor has it that the South Korea-based company is well into R&D, and may present some improvements in the camera setup for its upcoming Galaxy flagships, notably the Galaxy Note 6 and Galaxy S8.

SamMobile reports that speculations suggest Samsung to be working on a new camera setup, ostensibly to be used as improvement features for its next Galaxy flagship projects. Technically speaking, the rumors surrounding the latest development paint a huge leap in Samsung's camera department. Reportedly, the new camera setup will feature a brand-new 1/1.7-inch CMOS camera sensor with an aperture as wide as ƒ/1.4. In addition, the sensor will have a resolution between 18-24 megapixels. It is also said that a new compact 1/2.3-inch camera sensor is in the works.

If the rumors are true, this will be a significant boost in the features of the next Samsung Galaxy flagships. According to Pocket-Lint, the camera assembly on the current Galaxy S7 is already one of the better ones currently out in the market, and a huge jump in megapixels will be a main specs feature for the Galaxy S8 or the Galaxy Note 6. Meanwhile, having a bigger sensor will mean more light will be absorbed by the sensor, and this translates to better image captures even in low-light conditions.

Samsung stepping up its camera setup seems to be a new frontier in the smartphone flagship wars, as some of the competitors are highlighting their image capture features as a selling point. Recently, two major competitors, Huawei and HTC, launched their own flagships that boast of "better camera qualities". The Huawei P9 features a dual-cam setup in partnership with Leica, while the HTC 10 heralds a return to HTC's signature UltraPixel camera setup.
