Sony's next flagship lineup, the Xperia Z4, was rumoured to be released during this year's Mobile World Congress held in Barcelona. However, the company just announced the Z4 tablet, with no news about a new smartphone on the horizon. The MWC has come and gone and there are still no details, except for an abundance of leaks and rumors.

It seems, though, that mobile hardware giant Qualcomm has inadvertently confirmed one of the rumors. It is likely that the new Xperia Z4 will use the company's latest Snapdragon 810 chip.

In the statement, Qualcomm lists Sony as one of the potential companies that would use the latest chipset, with Sony's Gen Tsuchikawa quoted as saying, "We're excited about the new capabilities of the Snapdragon 810 processor and are looking forward to working with Qualcomm Technologies as we bring new Xperia products to consumers later this year."

Since Qualcomm's statement, different benchmarks have placed the upcoming Z4 in different tests. The GFXBench listed a new Sony model under the code Sony E6553, which tech observers say might be the technical nomenclature for the Z4. It should be noted that the Z3 was codenamed D6603 and the Xperia Z was C6603. On the benchmark, the new device has a hardware profile that lists the Snapdragon 810 octa-core as its chipset, with 3 GB of RAM and a 32 GB internal storage.

Other reports say that the new flagship device of Sony could exhibit the next level in displays, a 5.5-inch with Quad HD resolution. This means that it would deliver crisp, vibrant and vivid 16 M colors in a 1440 x 2560 setup with at least 565 ppi pixel density. In terms of design, the Z4 will reportedly retain much of its predecessor's aesthetics, but with refinements such as Qi wireless charging and improved waterproofing standards.
