'Spelunky 2' release date news: Sony unveils game sequel at Paris Games Week 2017

Gameplay preview for Mossmouth's "Spelunky"Sony PlayStation

Fans of the PlayStation 3 title "Spelunky" have something to look forward to in the coming months as the game is about to get a whole new adventure. Sony introduced a number of new video games at the Paris Games Week PlayStation Conference this week, and one of the new titles was "Spelunky 2," which was confirmed to arrive in the PlayStation 4 console.

As reported by GameSpot, "Spelunky" creator Derek Yu already confirmed that the sequel will be released first in PS4 and Steam. For now, it is not certain if "Spelunky 2" will also be released in other gaming platforms like the original game, but Yu's statement implies that the sequel can be expected in other consoles.

At the Paris Games Week 2017, the first trailer for "Spelunky 2" revealed that the game will be much different than the first one, but the sequel will still have the same elements that the players enjoyed in the original. For one, it was teased that the setting of "Spelunky 2" will be in the outer space or the sky, unlike the first game that involved underground caves, temples, jungles, and mines.

"Spelunky 2" is also expected to introduce a new generation of characters to fans, given that many years have passed since the first game was launched. It was shown in the trailer that the main character from the first game has already grown old and weary, meaning that the sequel will have a new lead runner. This time around, the adventure will be taken by his daughter and her adorable pug named Monty.

The trailer only shows that "Spelunky 2" will be released in PS4, but there is still a possibility that the sequel will be supported by other platforms such as PC, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. It is also likely that the game will have a PS Vita version.

Mossmoth, the game studio behind the original game, is once again involved in developing "Spelunky 2" along with Blitworks. Meanwhile, Sony also launched other new game titles at the Paris Games Week 2017, including "Detroit: Become Human." The company also released a new trailer for "The Last of Us: Part II."
