'Splatoon 2' gets massive update, to feature raised level caps, winter gear, new game modes, maps, and more

"Splatoon 2" gets a massive update to be delivered on three separate dates. Nintendo

Nintendo's quirky colorful third-person shooter "Splatoon 2" is getting a major update. Avid players of the game will find the update like an early Christmas gift. For one, it is so massive that it had to be delivered in three separate servings.

The first of these updates, released on Nov. 23 was winter-themed. A ton of cosmetic content was added — 140 equipment items, to be exact — and most of these are a match for the cold. Granted, this is not a new thing for "Splatoon 2," as its developers are fond of releasing season-themed gear.

This update also comes with four new hairstyles to choose from upon character creation, as well as new tunes to jive with while enjoying the Splatoon experience.

However, the most interesting part of this update for gamers is the level cap increase; from 50, it is now at 99. The developers indeed know how to time the updates right, as new stuff can make the grind to max level even more enjoyable.

The second update, released on Nov. 24, provides the game with four new multiplayer maps. The themes on each will be varied enough that they will make for a fresh multiplayer experience. Matches can be fought out in a mall, a warehouse, or even a museum.

Meanwhile, the final update, scheduled for release on mid-December, promises an entirely new game mode. Called "clam blitz," it will involve players collecting clams scattered on the ground and then putting the said clams in the opposing team's clam buckets.

This is not as easy as it sounds because the buckets are protected by special barriers. Players need to collect ten regular clams to get the "power clam," which has the power to break said barriers.

All in all, "Splatoon 2" has something new for everyone. The three-part update is a surefire way to revitalize the game and a way to keep the fan base playing for years more.
