'Splatoon' free update adds two new weapons; Splatfest to kick off July 4

It has been nearly a month since the release of "Splatoon" but Nintendo still continues to roll out new content for its unique shooter. Joining the new maps and modes are two new weapons, with the new updates all for free.

Adding to the ink roller category, the new Carbon Roller is a lightweight roller which spreads ink and is very mobile when used by an Inkling. Although not that powerful when compared with other rollers, the Carbon Roller has Burst Bombs that gives it additional range that is perfect for mid- to long-range combat, and will also give players access to Inkzooka.

The other weapon that is added to the ink arsenal is the Custom Dual Squelcher, a rapid fire gun that also fires out Squid Beakons. This specialty allows the Inkling to make a super jump on the Squid Beakons' locations. In addition, the Custom Dual Squelcher also has Killer Wails, special attacks that zones out enemies.

The two new weapons completes the Inklings' current arsenal, as North American "Splatoon" players prepare for the very first Splatfest episode. Splatfest is a special in-game event where matches take place in levels set at night with lights blazing. Originally scheduled to take place on June 20, the event was set back to due technical issues and will instead kick off on July 4 at 12:00 a.m. PT and will run for 24 hours, ending at 11:59 p.m. PT.

Aside from new weapons, further updates to the game is also expected, especially a major update reported to occur in August. The major update will not only add new maps and weapons but will also unlock a new four-person online team battle to the standard Turf War game mode. These are custom battles which can take place on any map with any rules.
