St Paul’s Cathedral has unveiled a new plan for huge refurbishment works. The historical London landmark will undergo a £10.8 million programme of interior work, with cleaning and repair being the main priorities, according to the Church of England Newspaper.

Recently the popular landmark, that attracts thousands of pilgrims and tourists from all over the world, has spent the last four years encased in scaffolding. Work on the exterior has seen the dome, stonework, gilding, mosaics and all sculptures restored.

A single donor gave a huge donation, which allowed the work to commence on the Cathedral. Sir Paul Getty’s generosity has seen over 1,000 dust bags filled and removed from the building, and also more than 11,000 square metres of plain stone, and 4,500 square metres of carved stone to be cleaned up.

The enormous £40 million project to restore St Paul’s interior and exterior to their former glory has now completed the fourth phase, and the project is on target to finish works in 2008. This target date has been set to signify celebrations for the 300th anniversary of the completion of the top dome.
