Less than a month away until the premiere of "The Last Jedi," and more details emerge about the characters that will be placed front and center in the upcoming film. Director Rian Johnson reveal some details regarding Supreme Leader Snoke's (Andy Serkis) role in the eighth installment.

Supreme Leader Snoke has always been a mystery to everyone. His origins and his motives for Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) and his goal of causing pain to the whole galaxy also remain a mystery to everyone. In "The Last Jedi," Snoke will be more actively involved in the fight between the First Order and the Resistance. Johnson shared some details regarding how big a part Snoke will be playing in the film.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Johnson revealed that like Rey's (Daisy Ridley) parentage, Snoke is there to serve a function in the story. He then compared this to the original trilogy, which George Lucas directed.

"In the original trilogy, we didn't know anything about the Emperor except exactly what we needed to know, which is what Luke (Mark Hamill) knew about him, that he's the evil guy behind Vader. But then in the prequels, you knew everything about Palpatine because his rise to power was the story. We'll learn exactly as much about Snoke as we need to. But the really exciting for me is we will see more of him and Andy Serkis will get to do much more in this film than he did in the last one," said Johnson.

So, just like the evil forces from the original and prequel trilogies, fans can expect to learn more about Snoke in the upcoming film. Knowing that he will serve a bigger purpose in the story for "Episode 8" brings about the questions of why he is doing what he does.

"Star Wars Episode 8: The Last Jedi" will premiere on Dec. 15.
