'Supernatural' season 11 spoilers, plot: Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles talk about the Darkness

Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles in SupernaturalCW

In less than two months, in season 11 of "Supernatural," fans of the Winchester brothers will see them teaming up to fight their biggest enemy thus far — the Darkness. This time around, Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) will be on the same side as they try to figure out what the Darkness is and what it wants.

Last season's finale found Sam and Dean's world literally covered in Darkness as the Mark of Cain was removed from Dean's arm. Without a host to serve as its lock and key, the old evil was unleashed on the planet, with the dark cloud overtaking the brothers.

According to TVLine, Ackles said at the show's Comic-Con panel that the Darkness storyline is like revisiting the series old formula, wherein the brothers always had each other's backs against a common enemy.

"It's going back to the original format of having both brothers unaffected, meaning not drinking demon blood, not with the Mark of Cain on their arm," said Ackles, adding that Sam and Dean get to fight as themselves.

Padalecki said that Sam and Dean will have to spend some time figuring out the Darkness' origins and how to defeat it, since their new enemy comes from pre-biblical times and no one really knows anything about it.

"We have no one to really turn to because no one really knows anything," said Padalecki.

But the brothers won't be completely alone as Castiel (Misha Collins) will be around to help them against the Darkness. However, it may take some time before he can be of much help to Sam and Dean because last season, Rowena used her magical prowess to compel Castiel to kill Crowley, and in season 11, he'll still be affected by that spell.

Speaking to Zap2It, Collins said Castiel is going to "turn dark" as he will be suffering from the side effects of the evil spell.

"He's going to have blood-shot eyes and be kind of rabid and that's going to be something he's dealing with for quite some time," said the actor.

"Supernatural" season 11 premieres on Oct. 7 on The CW.
