"Supernatural" has brought on a lot of twists and turns throughout its long run, and in the season 11 finale, fans were given a surprising shock when Mary Winchester (Samantha Smith) was brought back to life. Showrunner Andrew Dabbs has now given a few details regarding her character and her return to the show.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Dabb confirmed that Mary is 100 percent human. This would immediately debunk any rumor that she had been given demonic or angelic properties after spending a lot of time in the afterlife. Fans have assumed this, given how the show has seen demons turn into humans and humans into angels and more.

Dabb also explained that they have been trying to bring back Mary for two years already, but the idea remained afloat because it didn't feel right to bring her back during the previous seasons. It was only during that pivotal moment in the season 11 story arc that bringing her to life felt just appropriate.

He also explained that bringing Mary into the story would not affect the main focus of the show — Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles).

"At the heart, the dynamic of the show is unchanged in that it's always going to be about the brothers, it's always going to be about the family they've put together, and Mary doesn't so much upset that as complement it. When she comes in, it's family through another lens. She is their origin myth, her death led to everything, so when she comes back, the boys having a mother again which they really haven't had," he explained.

However, Mary will be a little troubled at first because she never wanted her sons to become hunters, and yet, they are. Dabb explains that for the initial moments, they will need to get accustomed to each other's new lives before things start to settle in.

"Supernatural" season 12 is scheduled to premiere on Thursday, Oct. 13, at 9 p.m. ET on The CW.
