Writers for "Switched at Birth" season 5 have some exciting new things in store for the characters and viewers alike.

In the season 4 finale episode titled "And Always Searching for Beauty," a time jump spanning 10 months showed Bay (Vanessa Marano) and Daphne (Katie Leclerc) living in China, speaking Mandarin and even working new jobs. But an emergency phone call prompted the pair to fly home immediately.

According to a tweet by Lizzy Weiss, the ABC show's creator, the first episode of the upcoming season is titled "The Call." In the episode, fans of the show might finally find out who the caller was and why Bay and Daphne suddenly had to rush home.

Rumor has it that the phone call had something to do with Toby (Lucas Grabeel) and Lily's (Rachel Shenton) baby, who reportedly has Down Syndrome. If that is so, then it could be one of their family members on the other end of the line.

Youth Health Mag reports that there have also been speculations that the Kennish family are facing financial problems, which would also be the reason for the call.

Fans are worried that the worst has happened, judging by the look on Bay's face when she received the phone call. Have the writers decided to do the unthinkable and kill someone off?

Weiss sat down for an interview with The Wrap and discussed the teen drama series. When asked about the cliffhanger and what season 5 has in store, Weiss said: "Not everything is fleshed out, but there is a general plan ... We had a million ideas [for what the cliffhanger would be], and we may still use a couple of them. There are some stories that I still love and that we may still use."

"Switched at Birth" season 5 will return in 2016 on Freeform, ABC Family's official new name.
