Although Scott Lockhart's death has been solved somewhat, that doesn't indicate that Showtime's "The Affair" is going to end. Earlier this month, the network renewed the psychological mystery for a season 3. But when will the new season air? And what's next for central characters Noah, Alison, and Helen?

Showtime dished an early Christmas gift for all "The Affair" fans early in December by announcing that the drama is renewed for season 3. But, to date, that was about the end of the good news that was first reported by TVLine.

The network has so far withheld information on what to expect in the junior season or even when it is going to premiere.

Many fans have been clamoring for the return of "The Affair" on the small screen, even as they already know who were behind Scott Lockhart's (Colin Donnell) death: Allison (Ruth Wilson) and Helen (Maura Tierney).

There is still more ground to cover storywise as Noah Solloway (Dominic West) is still on trial for Cole's (Joshua Jackson) brother's death, even if this was a result of him being in the wrong place at an unfortunate time.

Will he head to jail? That's the question to be answered in season 3, says The New York Times.

The report also adds Noah's two choices in avoiding the can: reveal who the true driver was that night or talk about the stone place card at the crash site. Fans will have to wait if he reveals any of these in upcoming season.

Back in October, when the show has still not received a green light for season 3, actor Joshua Jackson already talked to HNGN about what the next season will look like, "[There] is a place that the story can go where the suffering isn't the central focus, since were playing these things out in kind of real-time for these characters. The suffering is real because you don't just get to pivot from a bad situation to a happy one. But there is a place where these people come to a sense of resolution and I think if we got a third season that's what the third chapter would be about."

See if there will indeed be a 'sense of resolution' when "The Affair" season 3 comes back to Showtime some time next year.
