'The Blacklist' season 4 spoilers: trailer suggests identity of Liz's father will be revealed

NBC

"The Blacklist" season 3 ended with Liz (Megan Boone) faking her death so she and her husband and newly born child could escape to Cuba but at the last moment she was kidnapped by Alexander Kirk (Ulric Thomsen), who claimed to be her biological father. Season 4's new trailer hints that the truth of Kirk's statement will be laid bare.

In the beginning of the trailer Liz is seen talking to Reddington (James Spader) as they discuss the time when Liz was young and when their home burned to the ground. According to Red, Liz's father did not survive the flames and at this point she figures out that he was there, present when her father supposedly died.

The trailer then cuts to a shot of Reddington's back, revealing he has numerous burn scars that further prove he was present when Liz's father allegedly died. This would prove that Red knows who Liz's father is and gives weight to his statement when he tells Liz that Kirk is lying about being her father and that Kirk may have darker motives.

"I don't know why we wouldn't believe him. Red's said before that he's not Liz's father. Kirk shows up in her life and says he's her father. Liz should take him at his word. She thought she shot her father. It raises a number of questions, which is going to be the joy of Season 4," explained executive producer Jon Bokenkamp in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

Fellow executive producer John Eisendrath explained in the same report that they had to work around the story very carefully because they have tackled Liz's parentage before and they did not want to negate what had already been established in a previous season.

The identity of Liz's true father will be unraveled when "The Blacklist" season 4 premieres on Sept. 22.
