The third person psychological horror game "The Evil Within" will be subjecting players to the dilapidated and dreading environment once more in the title's upcoming DLC, which is expected to be released this March. The DLC has been titled "The Assignment" and players will be controlling Julie Kidman, who accompanies Detective Castellanos, the protagonist of the game along with Joseph Oda, who aids the player on several occasions in the original game.

Bethesda, the game's publisher, had made the announcement by releasing a 14 second teaser trailer, in which a character can be heard repeating the phrase, "must sleep." "The Assignment" will be a story driven campaign mode in which Julie Kidman ends up getting trapped in to the same horror vortex as Castellanos and Oda.

Throughout the game, it can be seen that Kidman pursues Leslie Withers, a patient of Marcelo Jimenez, in an attempt to get out of the mental prison that Ruvik has created through the manifestation of his thoughts. It has not been stated whether or not the player will be encountering the antagonist for the second time but the similar survival and puzzle solving experience will be maintained.

The downloadable content is part of "The Evil Within's" $19.99 DLC season pass, which also includes two other add-ons. Released on Oct. 14, 2014, the game's director, Shinji Mikami (who is also responsible for directing the critically acclaimed Resident Evil game series) spoke to IGN and stated that he wanted to make a survival horror game as he believed there were not that many titles being developed that emanated the horror atmosphere during immersion.

After its release, the game was received with positive reviews, but was criticized for having its frame rate locked at 30 FPS for the Microsoft Windows platform. The game went on to set the record for the highest selling first month sales for a new survival horror title. The record was later surpassed by "Dying Light."
