'The Good Doctor' season 2 spoilers: Shaun Murphy returns to the hospital, for now

Shaun Murphy, played by Freddie Highmore, is returning to the hospital, but only for a limited time in episode 12 of "The Good Doctor."

The previous episode, "Islands: Part One," saw Shaun leaving everything behind after and argument with Dr. Aaron Glassman (Richard Schiff).

He sets off on a road trip with friend and neighbor Leah, and experiences a lot of new things -- driving a car for a long trip, getting drunk, singing karaoke, and even enjoying his very first kiss.

It was an exhilarating journey that made him see more of how it is to live an ordinary life. But just as he was in the highest point of his stress-relieving journey, Leah drops a bombshell, she is leaving her job to follow her true passion -- restoring old cars. That means leaving Shaun as well.

Considering she was the only friend he has outside of work, the news came as a huge blow. For the audience, it was also hard to accept that their love line was broken even before it started.

By this time, Shaun has become an expert at running off. He leaves again, but this time, alone.

Episode 12, titled "Islands: Part Two," will show Shaun's return to St. Bonaventure Hospital, but he does not plan to stay for long.

His short journey made him realize that he needs a more permanent change in his life. And he is going back only to give Dr. Glassman his two weeks' notice.

The previous episode also saw Dr. Marcus Andrews (Hill Harper) and Dr. Neil Melendez (Nicholas Gonzalez) working on a sensitive case -- a kidney transplant between a pair of twins. Next week, it will be revealed that the twins suffered complications from the surgery, and the doctors will have to make a life-changing decision.

"The Good Doctor" airs Mondays, 10 p.m. EDT, on ABC.
