Director Brad Bird recently sat with Entertainment Weekly and gave a few updates regarding the upcoming animated Pixar film, "The Incredibles 2." Very little is known about the sequel and development for the movie has been ongoing ever since the first movie released back in 2004.

Bird did explain that he wasn't going to give any spoilers at the beginning of the interview but he did confirm that production for "The Incredibles 2" was already underway, confirming that the studios have already begun with the animation work and that his script has already been completed.

"It's very actively moving, and we're excited about it. We're trying to take it in some new directions," he then explained. This would coincide with a much older interview he had with IGN where he explained the movie would not be affected by the recent rise in popularity of superhero films and would instead stil focus primarily on the characters.

As Entertainment Weekly points out the movie is releasing in a much different environment compared to when the first movie launched in 2004. Back then very few superhero movies had been successful but nowadays it has become one of the most prolific and most profitable genre in Hollywood today.

"Hopefully it's the same characters and feel, but going in a new direction," Bird explained. He did not hint how much time may have exactly passed between the two films. "I mean, that's the trick with a sequel. It's repeating yourself, without repeating yourself."

Rumors about the film's plot have begun rampant although Bird did not confirm nor deny any of them. Several fans speculate that "The Incredibles 2" may involve Syndrome somehow surviving the first film's finale and may influence Jack-Jack into turning against his family. Others speculate Jack-Jack and Dash will be fighting each other.

"The Incredibles 2" will release in theaters on June 21, 2019.
