'The Last of Us 2' release date news: Game launch expected in 2017

"The Last of Us" has been hailed as one of the greatest video games of the past few years and yet developer Naughty Dog had to halt development on a sequel in order to prioritize and release "Uncharted 4: A Thief's End," which had been numerously delayed. According to Movie News Guide, "The Last of Us 2" may finally launch and it could release as early as 2017.

However, a 2017 release date would indicate that the game may have been in development for some time and that the developers are simply picking up where they left off when they had to focus on "Uncharted 4." If this proves true then the game may launch any time between E3 2017 and by the holidays next year, between November and December.

Should the game be developed from scratch then there is a possibility of it being delayed as far back as 2018 or even 2019 depending on how high the standards for the franchise are. As with the previous title, "The Last of Us 2" is likely going to be a Playstation 4 exclusive and may be Playstation VR compatible.

No ports for the Xbox One or PC are expected given that the first game was a PS4 exclusive.

Neurogadget reports that while the game could be a sequel, featuring Joel and Ellie as the main characters once again, it might feature brand new characters and a new story that could have little to no connections with the first game. The sequel might be set in the same world but in a different part of the country, focusing on a different struggle.

However, it is important to note that Naughty Dog has not confirmed nor denied any of the rumors circling the game. No announcements have yet been made regarding the game's development, release date or features and any information at this time should still be taken with precaution.
