Fans have been waiting with bated breath for the arrival of "The Legend of Zelda" game for the Wii U, but they have so far have had to deal with nothing but news of further delays.

Unfortunately, there's still no new word regarding a possible release date for the Wii U title.

The only new bit of information that fans can cling to in terms of looking to a possible release date for the game was something mentioned during a recent interview of the franchise's producer Eiji Aonuma with Gamespot.

According to Aonuma, the recently released "The Legend of Zelda: Triforce Heroes" game has had no impact on the timeline for the other title from the franchise that is earmarked for the Wii U. That would mean that "The Legend of Zelda" for the Wii U is still on track, although the exact timeline for it remains a mystery.

Earlier this year, it was announced that "The Legend of Zelda" for the Wii U would have its release date moved from the end of 2015 to a still unknown time in 2016, Moviepilot reported.

With the release date delayed, fans were quick to ask exactly why the game was no longer on schedule, and apparently, the people behind the game may have valid reasons.

In a conversation with IGN, Aonuma revealed that the developers of the Wii U game had a "surprise" in store for fans of the franchise, although he did not reveal exactly what that would be.

Aonuma did hint that "The Legend of Zelda" for the Wii U could feature an open world environment that has not been seen in any other game from the series.

Aonuma also mentioned that the team behind the game has been paying attention to what fans have been saying about it and that the comments have factored into its development, although what that ultimately means for the final product will remain a mystery for now.
