'The Muppets' premiere episode 1 to feature Elizabeth Banks, Tom Bergeron, Tracy Anderson
The Muppets are coming back to television, but this time, the show caters to adults as Kermit, Miss Piggy, Gonzo, and the rest of the gang deal with breakups, divorce, new relationships, social media, and other things that grownups can relate to.
In the first look presentation for the sitcom made to "convince ABC to air the show," the Muppets are brainstorming for their new show, and Kermit is at the helm and trying to get everyone to focus.
"I have some really great news," says Kermit. "ABC wants to put on an all-new, primetime series starring the Muppets!"
Kermit adds that the show will be all about their personal lives and will be "more behind the scenes, sort of an adult Muppets show." Animal says that he's about to start Crossfit today to prepare for the series. Elizabeth Banks asks if they're planning to include famous celebrities and Kermit says that it's a good suggestion.
"Do you know anybody?" Kermit asks her.
"Well, I could ask around," says the "Pitch Perfect 2" actress and director.
In the teaser, it is revealed that Miss Piggy is bailing on the show, and Gonzo tells Kermit that it's her way of getting back at him for dating Denise, another muppet who resembles Piggy and happens to work in the marketing department of ABC. Meanwhile, Piggy has clearly moved on and is living the single life, and Fozzie and his human girlfriend are having a hard time convincing her parents that their relationship is going to work.
In the first episode titled "Pig Girls Don't Cry," more will be revealed about Piggy and Kermit's split and how they'll try to work together as Kermit will be the producer of Piggy's show.
Guest stars include Elizabeth Banks as herself, Tracy Anderson as herself, and Tom Bergeron as himself, according to The Futon Critic. Imagine Dragons will also be on the show and will be performing their new single, "Roots."
"The Muppets" premieres on Tuesday, Sept. 22, at 8 p.m. on ABC.
