'The Punisher' news: Lead actor Jon Bernthal speaks about gun violence

Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal) is out for blood again in the upcoming Netflix series "The Punisher."Netflix/What's on Netflix

It seems "The Punisher" not only wants to eradicate crime, he also wants to make his own show a lesson for society about gun violence.

Jon Bernthal, the actor chosen for the role of Frank Castle a.k.a. The Punisher, has stated that he thinks anti-gun violence advocacy is something that Marvel and Netflix' "The Punisher" does well.

"I think and I'm not... look, I think art, sort of the best thing that art can do is be a mirror to society and reflect what's going on and make you ask questions, force you to ask questions not necessarily try to answer them and I think one thing that the show does and you know in talking to Steve [Lightfoot], I'm not even sure whether he did this on purpose or not — Steve's the writer — but I really think that there's nothing preachy about this show," said Bernthal.

While Bernthal thinks that the show does not necessarily impose its own set of beliefs on its viewers, it does feature a lot of gun violence, as is the nature of the character. Bernthal also thinks that the show's timely reflections on the current state of society today is a convenient way to spark discussion on gun violence.

The show's premiere was reportedly pushed back due to last month's tragic Las Vegas incident, and its panel at a recent Comic-Con was even canceled because of the sensitivity of its material and how it may have caused problems with the victims of the shooting. Despite this, Bernthal thinks that now would be a good time for people to talk about gun violence, not only in Las Vegas, but in other affected areas as well, stating that "The Punisher" can be a good way to bring up and hopefully resolve the issue of gun violence.

"The Punisher," a spin-off of Marvel's "Daredevil" on Netflix, is set to arrive to the network on Nov. 17.
