'The Star' is a must-watch movie this Christmas; what other films should Christians see?

Hollywood doesn't have a good track record when it comes to Christmas movies that truly share the true meaning of the holidays - the birth of Jesus Christ and the incredible gift God has given to the world.

Dr. Ted Baehr, founder and head of Movieguide, notes in an article for Charisma News that Hollywood movies featuring Christmas have been "few and far between" over the recent years. But this year, it seems like things are picking up, especially with the release of "The Star."

"The Star" is described as a fun and charming animated comedy about the birth of Jesus, and Baerh is even praising it as one of the best Christmas movies of all time. After its release, another Christmas-themed movie called "The Man Who Invented Christmas" is set to follow. The film stars Dan Stevens, of Downton Abbey and Beauty and the Beast fame, and is about how literary author Charles Dickens changed the world's perception of Christmas when he wrote "A Christmas Carol."

Baerh is also recommending the comedy "Daddy's Home 2," which stars Mark Wahlberg and Mel Gibson. Even though it is rated PG-13, Baerh said it still incorporates the celebration of Christmas in a positive way.

"We hope this trend in making uplifting Christmas movies will continue," he said. "We should remember, however, that, as they say, 'Jesus is the Reason for the Season.' Just as people shouldn't be afraid of saying, 'Merry Christmas,' they should also not be afraid of talking about Jesus Christ and the salvation He brings during this glorious time of joy."

"The Star" has only received a 55 percent critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but it has fared much better with ordinary theater-goers, as it has received a 78 percent audience approval rating. "All told, 'The Star' should be a safe bet for families during the upcoming holiday season," one reviewer on the site commented.

"For those who might be looking for some stories at least based on Christianity itself, 'The Star' is something for you to see," another added.
