'Tokyo Ghoul' season 3 release date news: Season expected to arrive in summer despite lack of material, may come with new mobile game

"Tokyo Ghoul" season 3 is expected to launch this summer, but according to a report from HNGN, this new season will focus entirely on a new protagonist instead of Ken Kaneki and that it may launch simultaneously with a tie-in mobile game.

"Ever since we began simulcasting the anime series last year, fans of 'Tokyo Ghoul' have been clamoring for a mobile game. With Season 2 now finished and Season 3 set for 2016, the anticipation for the game has only grown higher," stated FUNimation CEO Gen Fukunaga.

The exact nature of the mobile game has yet to be revealed and it is unclear what genre it will fall under. There is also no indication if the game will be an adaptation of the previously released two seasons or if it will tie in with the upcoming third season.

It is also pointed out that the reason for the shift in focus, from lead Ken Kaneki to Touka Kirishima, is due to the lack of completed source material. The manga is only a few story arcs ahead of the anime, which means the latter is set to overtake the events of the manga very soon.

However, this is not the only time that an anime has caught up to the events of its source material. The most famous event was when "Fullmetal Alchemist" caught up to the manga and had to delve into its own story. When the manga was finished, a more faithful adaptation titled "Fullmetal Alchemist: Brothehood" was released.

Some series, such as "Shingeki no Kyojin" aka "Attack on Titan," do not proceed with a new anime season until there is enough material in the manga to adapt while others, such as "Naruto" and the popular "Dragon Ball Z," tend to rely on filler episodes as they wait for new material to release.
