Fans who may have been holding out hope for a second season of "Wayward Pines" appear to be headed for disappointment.

According to the show's executive producer Chad Hodge, the entire story of "Wayward Pines" has already been told, and as such, it would be difficult, if not altogether impossible for there to even be a second season, Venture Capital Post reported.

Hodge went on to reveal that "Wayward Pines" was meant to be a mini-series, thus suggesting that a definite end point was always visible. Had the show been developed as a series, it could have gone on indefinitely for as long as fan interest was present and resource material was available.

The resource material issue would also seem to be another stumbling block for any second season of the show. The original book trilogy that "Wayward Pines" is based on has been tapped out, and that means there are no more existing stories to tell.

If there is any hope at all for a second season of "Wayward Pines," that would reportedly have to necessitate the trilogy's author, Blake Crouch, coming up with something new, and on that front, it appears all is not lost.

In an interview with Deadline, M. Night Shyamalan revealed that he had been in talks with Crouch regarding the show. Shyamalan also revealed that they do have some ideas that could be considered for a second season of "Wayward Pines," although he did clarify that nothing is officially in the works.

It's unclear what a second season of "Wayward Pines" could focus on, considering the clear cut finale of the first season. According to Cinema Blend, a possibility would be for the second season to be set somewhere far removed from the first season completely.

As of now, the future of "Wayward Pines" remains hazy, although more clarity on the matter should come out soon.
