"When Calls the Heart" is on its fifth season, and at least one of its new cast members are already excited for the show's return. Lori Loughlin will play as the Mayor Abigail Stanton— leader of the coal-mining town.

Loughlin said that she was excited that her character is not one dimensional, and that she "tells a story." Many fans are aware that "When Calls the Heart" is a period piece, and the actress thought that the character of Mayor Abigail Stanton fits perfectly with the persona that she long-wanted to convey on the screen.

The actress was particularly thrilled about the Mayor's actions, even prasing her. "I love that I'm telling a story about a woman who is a single working mom — raising a family, holding down a job, running her own business, being involved in the community politically with the other women," she said.

She also said that the Mayor personality is relatable, and she said that this is one of the key things that people look for in TV shows nowadays. She sees Stanton as someone whom the audience would gain insight and inspiration from.

"When people are watching things, people want to identify with characters even if it's a period piece," Loughlin added.

Loughlin also shared that she had a strong voice regarding the character development of Mayor Stanton and her assigned role in the show.

The actress is with a slew of talented actors and actresses. She is joined by Erin Krakow, who was previously in "Army Wives;" and Jack Wagner, most known for his work in "General Hospital" and "Melrose Place." Canadian actor Kavan Smith, who plays Leland "Lee" Coulter, also starred in "Stargate Atlantis" and "Smallville."

Loughlin herself is a TV personality in her own right. She starred in "Full House" and "Fuller House" prior to joining the period drama.

"When Calls the Heart." season 5 airs Sunday on the Hallmark Channel, 9 p.m. Eastern Time.
